Sometimes you have give credit when it is due. While I think the drug industry is on the whole, rather mercenary, they do on occassion come through with good advances, that actually do help people who need it. Like Viagra is for those with a dysfunction, that got turned into more of a recreational drug than anything, still for those suffering it did help. However, I just don’t buy they did it for them, but saw the potential for other sales.
However they have come up with some new advances for those who are HIV+ and are resistent to the wide range of drugs currently in use. The FDA is supposedly going to begin hearings from its advisory panel on the safety of the new drug. So its a step forward I think, and nice that they are paying attention to those who are in need of such new drugs.
The FDA said Thursday its antiviral drugs advisory committee will meet April 24 to assess the safety and effectiveness of Pfizer’s maraviroc, according to documents posted to the agency’s Web site. FDA is not required to follow the guidance of its outside experts, though it often does. (story)
Though I am wondering, what else is in it for them. Guess the whole Viagra thing has me a bit jaded. Yet these days it is about the money, not human lifes. Shame really, because I think given half a chance, great inroads against diseases could be made, if we just realized it is about people, not profit margins.
